A Long Walk to Water:

Based on a True Story

by

Linda Sue Park

This book is historical fiction, but it's rooted in the true biographical story of Salva Dut, a Sudanese refugee.

Subjects you'll come across in this book:

refugees
survival
civil war in Sudan (Africa) the "Lost Boys"
water/safe water supply emigration
resilience perseverance

"[A] spare, hardhitting novel...Salva's journey is tragic and harrowing...but not without hope." (Publisher's Weekly)[1]

"...readers will be stunned by the triumphant climax of the former refugee who

makes a difference with the necessities that we all take for granted."  (BookList)

When the Sudanese civil war reaches his village in 1985, 11-year-old Salva becomes separated from his family and must walk with other Dinka tribe members through southern Sudan, Ethiopia, and Kenya in search of a safe haven.  Based on the life of Salva Dut, who, after emigrating to America in 1996, began a project to dig water wells in Sudan.

A Long Walk to Water also tells the story of Nya, a young Sudanese girl who journeys each day for years to bring water to her family.

Of note:

  • Salva's last name is pronounced "doot."  It rhymes with "root."
  • The book has 121 pages.  It was published in 2010.
  • Nya's story and Salva's story appear throughout the book in different fonts, each with its own color.
  • The book contains an author's note, a note from Salva Dut, and a map.
  • Salva Dut and the author know each other.  They live in the same city.
